Religious Violence in Malaysia

Thought this was interesting. Not sure if anyone knows or has heard about this but it's caused quite a debate and uproar with many communities.I first heard about it after it affected the Sikh community. Here is the article:

Temples and churches have been attacked by some Muslim groups that are angry at the usage of Allah by other religions. Their argument is that Allah is a sacred word that is only meant to be used by Muslims. From what I learned in RLG100, the word Allah had been used way before Islam was established. However, those that are against its use by other religions are stating that it's "exclusive" to Islam. Moreover, there is a fear that if Christians use Allah in their churches, it will confuse people and cause religious conversions.

I can give the Sikhi perspective on why Allah is used in Sikh temples. It is because hymns from various individuals of different religions have been included in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, the Sikhi holy scripture. For example, many of Sheikh Farid's (a Muslim) banis (writings) are found in the Guru Granth Sahib so the word Allah appears him in the scriptures. Even a few Sikh Gurus have used Allah in their banis to refer to God, just as the Christians in Malaysia. Here is an example:

"O Baba, the Lord Allah is Inaccessible and Infinite.
He is Allah, the Unknowable, the Inaccessible, All-powerful and Merciful Creator.
In the Dark Age of Kali Yuga, the Atharva Veda became prominent; Allah became the Name of God.
The Primal Lord God is called Allah. The Shaykh's turn has now come."
- Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji

While some might find it ridiculous that a "word" has led to violence, I think there is more to it. I don't agree that Allah should only be used by Muslims but what I mean here is that for some it's not just a word. For example, in Judaism devotees are not to even write down the word God because it would be in vain. So a word is not just a word because it can hold a sacred significance for many.

So if any of you come across this blog, what do you think of this issue? Should Allah be used only by the Muslim community? Or should there be no restrictions placed on who can and cannot use the word Allah?
